Clean Margarita Recipe
April 30, 2013 by Melanie Zook
Looking for a clean margarita recipe, using simple whole foods? Here it is. I’ve never been a fan of margarita (or other cocktail) mixes, not only because of the sweet-and-sour mix taste, but because of their ingredients: artificial flavors & colors, as well as high fructose corn syrup. There’s “skinny” mixes out there now, but I’d rather steer clear of the artificial sweeteners too. Even agave syrup can be just as processed as high fructose corn syrup.
Ingredients
Juice of 1 fresh lime (a citrus press comes in handy here; roll the lime on the counter before cutting in half to get as much juice out as possible)
2 shots tequila (reposado, gold or silver)
2 shots water
1 shot Cointreau (or triple sec, or a splash of fresh-squeezed orange juice)
½ shot simple syrup, more if you like sweeter cocktails (can be made ahead by simmering 1 part water + 2 parts sugar*, then stored in a jar in your bar area)
Ice
Method
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker & shake.
Pour into a chilled, salt-rimmed margarita glass & garnish with a lime wedge.
Optional: turn on the Gypsy Kings & report to the hammock.
*I use the organic, fair trade evaporated cane juice, now widely available. While it’s still sugar, it’s more responsibly produced than regular sugar. OR, try a simple syrup made with honey! It adds a subtle, unique flavor to your margarita.
